The city of Eindhoven in the southern parts of the Netherlands is well known for its modern appearance and is the city where Philips started with the production of light bulbs. Nowadays this translates into an annual light festival where this modernity and lightproduction is being combined with art. I went to see this festival, simply called GLOW, for the first time.
First of all I made the mistake of not getting any information on the installations, so all I have seen has been my own interpretation and I have no idea who the artists are who made them.
Some where pretty magical, some where a bit boring (most where basically just moving lights. whoop.) So here is what I liked best
At the beginning point of the route there was a bridge which had light underneat it that just went off with the sound of thunder. That was it.. I waited for something to happen for about 20 minutes, nothing happened apart from thunder and lightening like lights. There were a lot of disappointed kids here, but luckily they were bribed with those little laserlights by their parents to be nice so they could just fuck it all up for everyone.
After this disappointing starting point we continued on a lightened road which was very fairytale like and brought me back to my childhood, with fairylights flickering in the trees and flying wateringcans.
Next came projections on two big houses that were right across from each other, which was pretty trippy, making the houses move and such.
The best part was after walking through this residential area where children where trying to sell their homemade muffins, we went into an industrial area, where cool shit was happening. There where colourfull lightballs swinging around changing colour, and a performance with naked ladies. This is where I took one of my favourite photo's that evening, which you can see below.
After that there was a little walk back into the city where the churches were screen for projections again and things happened with 3d glasses that gave me a headache, but it looked pretty awesome. Some schoolkids had made drawings as well which where haning around in a lighted installation. I think I missed a part of the route because of my lack of a map, but I had fun.
If you're in the area, you'll have 5 more days (until the 15th of november that is) to see it. If you're bored. And like kids with laserpointers.. Well at least see the naked ladies, that was obviously the best part.
