I find it hard to review a performance that was flawless, and for fear of sounding too much like a fangirl I won't.
For a lack of better reviewing I want to put the video's of her last album How big how blue how beautiful side by side and analyse the so called "Odyssey" (This one is for you Linda!).
Chapter 1: What kind of man
This video begins with an idyllic scene where happy Florence is having a conversation with someone portraying her lover in a car. He heard her talking in her sleep and seemed sad, but he didn't want to wake her up because it wasn't his place to drag her out of the suffering.
Finaly we see the storm being shown on a tv, while Florence and her lover sit on the bed without a clear connectedness, followed by a close up of her with a man, whose lips she touches, and then her lips. This gesture towards her mouth is returning quite often in this Odyssey and might be significant for the spiritual path Florence is turning to.
This is followed by a scene in a car again, where she seems to talk about a dream where she is in the calm of the storm, but she can sense it. There seems to be a different vibe, the Florence we see here is not the bubbly, happy one we saw in the beginning of the video. The man she's with and her are also less affectionate. Apparently the disastrous event of the storm has not brought them closer together and they seem more distant instead.
Then there is a jump to her being baptised in the sea, her in a bathroom and then walking towards a chapel through the rain. The water seems to have a cleansing meaning here, maybe in a spiritual way.
As she is surrounded by these men in some kind of cellar, she seems to pull something invisible out of her mouth after singing "Mercy I implore". This gesture might mean she is cleansing her soul, as the mouth is believed to be a gateway for spiritual energy. The mercy she is asking for is from within herself during her internal, selfdestructive battle over this man.
As she is close again to the bruised man, we see Florence get baptised again in the sea and manages to breathe again it seems, after which the video jumps to the remains of the carcrash from the beginning of the video. She manages to drag herself out of the crashed vehicle, and is ready for a new beginning, with the room to breathe again, which this album seems to symbolise in its totality.
Sidenote: these will be uploaded in parts, I was a bit too elaborate and this would become a full essay if I did it all in one post.
Chapter 2: St Jude, will be up soon.
